The objectives for this presentation are:
– To be aware of the different types and stages of dementia and their relevance to the dental team
– Know the challenges associated with treating these patients and how to overcome these challenges by providing ‘dementia friendly dentistry’
– Know how to provide safe and appropriate dental care for patients living with dementia
The presentation will be led by Dr. Claire Curtin. Claire graduated from University College Cork in 2007 and after spending several years in hospital and general practice based posts, she embarked on three years full time specialist training in Special Care Dentistry in Wales. She is a registered Specialist in Special Care Dentistry with the Genera Dental Council in the UK since 2017.
Having held a Consultant in Special Care Dentistry role in Cardiff University Dental Hospital, she returned to Ireland in 2021 and now works as a Senior Administrative Dental Surgeon in the HSE in Cork and also leads the Dental Oncology clinic in Cork University Dental School and Hospital.
Claire is a committee member of the Irish Society of Disability and Oral Health and on the Boards of the Tricollegiate Membership in Special Care Dentistry and MFDS at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. In 2022, she was awarded a Fellowship of the International Association of Disability and Oral Health at their conference in Paris.
